In 2015, the Canadian government introduced the Express Entry program to ease the entry of skilled and experienced immigrants from different parts of the world to Canada. It is an electronic application management program for skilled internationals who want to live, work or study in Canada with permanent residence status. It manages applications for its three major economic categories like Federal Skilled Worker Class (FSWC), Federal Skilled Trades Class (FSTC) and Canadian Experience Class (CEC).
Interested candidates can apply for these programs after entering their profiles in express entry pool. In the pool, all the profiles are evaluated based on selection factors like age, education, previous work experience, proficiency in Canada’s official languages, French or English, connections in Canada, and arranged employment. Each profile gets specific Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score out of 1200 points. However, remember the minimum CRS score to be eligible for express entry program is 67 credits out of 100 in point assessment table.
Only higher scoring candidates receive the invitation to apply (ITAs) for Canadian permanent residence through Express entry draw. Approximately after every two weeks, IRCC announced the express entry draw with a specific minimum cut-off score. This cut-off score represents the CRS score of the lowest-ranked candidate who receives the ITA for PR through the draw.
Selected candidates need to submit applications for permanent residence within 60 days after getting ITA. If officers find the candidate eligible according to demands of the Canadian market, then they make a positive confirmation on the application.

In November 2017, the government started the tie-breaking rule to control the number of ITAs issued through the express entry draws. When more than one candidate scores the same CRS score, then tie-breaking rule comes into play for a selection of profiles. Only the candidates who have scored at or above the CRS score of the draw and submitted the profiles on or before the scheduled date and time are eligible for the invite to apply for Canada PR.
So, if you are interested in Express Entry draw, then make sure your total CRS score will be more than 450 as on average; the cut-off score exceeds 450 in the Express Draws. Under the three-year immigration plan, the government is planning to invite more than one million immigrants to Canada for permanent residency. It means this is the right time to apply for Express entry program. In case your score is low, then don’t be disheartened.
Below is the list of ways to enhance the CRS score effectively:
- Work on your educational background:
The Higher level of education leads to more credit points. However, it is worth noting that if you have been enrolled in any full-time course or training at the Canadian educational institution for a minimum of eight months, then you can get extra points.
- Provincial nomination:
Among all, this is one best way to boost up the CRS score with an additional of 600 points. There are many provincial nominee programs like OINP, SINP, and MPNP through which a candidate can apply for provincial nomination.
- Keep yourself updated:
The Canadian government often updates the immigration policies, programs, in-occupation list and more to drive the number of immigrants to Canada. So, it is necessary to keep yourself to enhance your chances for invites in invitation round.
- Pay attention to language proficiency:
Language ability can easily boost up your scores so, it is suggested having regular classes and lessons on English/ French makes you stand out in Express Entry pool
