Special immigrant visa program is designed for those applicants who worked with the USA Armed Forces or under Chief of Mission authority as a translator or interpreter in Iraq or Afghanistan. Through this program, up to fifty persons get visas each year.

Eligibility for Afghan and Iraqi Translator

In order to become eligible for this program, the applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • The applicants must be a national of Iraq or Afghanistan; and
  • The applicants must have worked as a translator or interpreter for a period of at least 12 months directly with the USA. Armed Forces or under COM authority; and
  • The applicants must have a written recommendation from a General or Flag Officer in the chain of command of the USA. Armed Forces unit that was supported by the applicants, as a translator or interpreter, or from the chief of Mission from the embassy where the applicants worked.

Special Immigrant Visas for Iraqis who were employed by/on behalf of the USA Government. 

This program is for all those Iraqi nationals who were employed by or on behalf of the USA government in Iraq and who meet certain requirements. The SIV process is for Iraqi employees and contractors who were employed by or behalf of the USA government in Iraq on or after March 20, 2013, and prior to September 30, 2013, and who have experienced or are experiencing an ongoing serious threat as a consequence of that employment.

Eligibility for Afghan and Iraqi Translator

  • The applicant must be a national of Iraq; and
  • The applicants must have been employed by, or on behalf of, the USA government in Iraq on or after March 20, 2003, and prior to September 30, 2013, for a period of one year or more; and
  • The applicants must have served faithful and valuable service to the USA government that should be documented in a letter of recommendation from their supervisor; and
  • The applicants must have experienced or must be experiencing an ongoing serious threat as a consequence of their employment by the government of the USA government.

Special Immigrant Visas for Afghans who were employed by/on behalf of the USA Government. 

Through this program, the Afghan nationals who meet certain requirements and who were employed in Afghanistan are issued a visa. Those Afghan national must meet the following requirements:

  • They must be employed in Afghanistan by or on behalf of the USA government in Afghanistan, or
  • They must be employed in Afghanistan by the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), or a successor mission to work as an interpreter or translator for USA military personnel or to perform sensitive and trusted activities for USA military personnel stationed at ISAF.

Eligibility For Afghan Translators

  • The applicant must be a national of Afghanistan; and
  • The applicants must have been employed in Afghanistan for a period of at least two years between October 7, 2001, and December 31, 2020;
  • The applicants must have employed by, or on behalf of, the USA government; in a capacity that required the applicants to serve as an interpreter or translator for personnel of the Department of State or USAID; to serve as an interpreter or translator for USA Military personnel; to perform sensitive and trusted activities for the USA government; or
  • The applicants must have employed in Afghanistan by the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), or a successor mission to work as an interpreter or translator for USA military personnel or to perform sensitive and trusted activities for USA military personnel stationed at ISAF.
  • The applicants must have been employed by, or on behalf of, the USA government in Iraq on or after March 20, 2003, and prior to September 30, 2013, for a period of one year or more; and
  • The applicants must have served faithful and valuable service to the USA government or ISAF, or a successor mission that should be documented in a letter of recommendation
  • The applicants must have experienced or must be experiencing an ongoing serious threat as a consequence of their employment by the government of the USA government.
