What is Family visa?
This visa is for all those family members who want to immigrate to the UK to live with their other family members. Those applicants could be a spouse, a child, parents, brother or sister or any other relative. So, all those people who are living apart from their family members in the UK can apply through this visa in order to live with them. This visa allows them to live in the UK for 33 months.

Apply as a partner or spouse
The applicants who want to apply as a partner or spouse must be of at least 18 years. In fact, applicants and their partner or spouse both need to be 18 or over.
The applicants must meet one of the following criteria:
- The applicants must be a British citizen
- The applicants must have settled in the UK
- The applicants must have refugee status or humanitarian protection in the UK
Requirements to apply for UK Family Visa
An applicant must meet the following requirements in order to apply as a partner or spouse:
- The applicants must be in a civil partnership or marriage that’s recognized in the UK
- The applicants must have been living together with their partner or spouse in a relationship for at least 2 years
- The applicants must be a fiancé, fiancée or proposed civil partner and will marry or enter into a civil partnership in the UK within 6 months of arriving
- The applicants must have a good knowledge of English
- The applicants must be financially strong enough to support their requirements as well the as the requirements of the dependents.
Apply as a parent for UK Family Visa
This category is for all those parents whose child is in the UK. Thus, the parents of a child who is in the UK can apply for this visa if they want to live with their child in the UK. This visa is valid for 2.5 years.
The applicants can apply for this visa if their child is below 18 years and is not living an independent life.
If the applicant’s child in living an independent life in the UK and the applicants want to live with them, then of the following must be true:
- The child must be a British citizen
- The child must have settled in the UK
- The child must have lived in the UK for 7 years continuously and it would not be reasonable for them to leave
Requirements for UK Family Visa
An applicant must meet the following requirements in order to apply as a parent:
- The applicants must be able to prove that they will take care of the child’s upbringing and must continue that.
- The applicants must have a good knowledge of English
- The applicants must be financially strong enough to meet the child’s requirements without claiming any public funds.
Apply as a Child
This category is for that child whose one of the parent is settled in the UK. All those applicants who want to live with their parents in the UK can apply through this category under the family visa.
Requirements to apply for UK Family Visa
An applicant must meet the following requirements in order to apply as a Child:
If the applicant is under 18 years:
- The applicant must not be married, in a civil partnership or living an independent life
- The applicant must be financially supported without claiming public funds
If the applicant is over 18 years:
The parent of the applicant can include the applicant in their application as a dependent, or the applicant can apply separately if:
- The applicant has permission to stay in the UK on a family visa when the applicant was under 18
- The applicant is not living an independent life
As an adult coming to be cared for by a relative
This visa is for all those applicants are from outside the UK but need long-term care from a parent, grandchild, brother, sister, son or daughter who are permanent residence of the UK
The relative must be one of the following:
- A British citizen
- Settled in the UK
- Having refugee status or humanitarian protection in the UK
An applicant can stay indefinitely in the UK if they join a family member who’s British or settled in the UK and as long as their family member’s stay if they have refugee status or humanitarian protection in the UK
Requirements:
- The applicants must need a long-term care to do everyday personal and household tasks because of the illness, disability or age
- The care required is not available or affordable in the country they live in
- The relative in the UK will be able to support, accommodate and care for the applicant without claiming public funds for at least 5 years
- The applicants must be 18 or over
On the basis of their private life
An applicant is allowed to apply for the family visa on the basis of their private life if they are living in the UK.
Requirements
- The applicant must be able to show that the applicant is below 18 years and have lived in the UK continuously for at least 7 years and it is unreasonable to expect you to leave the UK
- The applicants between 18 and 24 years must have lived continuously in the UK for more than half their life
- 25 or over and you’ve been in the UK continuously for 20 years
