Britain is set to launch its points-based immigration system next year, Indians get the benefits
The announcement of the introduction of point-based immigration system shook up the 50-year old immigration system of Britain. The government is set to welcome a controlled influx of skilled workers from across the world, including India. Until now, there is free movement of workers from Europe to the country to live and work there without any requirement of the visa. However, this uncontrolled movement between the UK and the EU has not been fulfilling the requirements of labor market of Britain. Around 70 per cent of the existing workforce in the country seems to be unfit according to the requirements.
So, the point-based immigration system will come into effect from January 01, 2021, following the concept of Australia’s point-based system. The points are awarded to candidates for certain factors like skills, education background, profession, salaries and more in order to welcome candidates with higher skills only.
On the launch of the point system Home secretary, Priti Patel said, “we will attract the brightest and the best from around the globe, boosting the economy and our communities.”
Minimum requirements for skilled migrants to migrate UK to work include a minimum of 70 points in the assessment grid, job offer, a salary of £25,600 a year, proficiency in English, A level qualification or equivalent. Highly skilled scientists and researchers will not need a job offer to come to the UK.
“With the focus on attracting highly skilled individuals, this should be good news for ambitious and well-qualified Indians and for businesses in the UK keen to hire top talent,” said Kelvin McCole, managing director of the UK India Business Council.
“A regularly reviewed shortage occupation list with promises of further flexibility will be vital for the effectiveness of the new system,” said Carolyn Fairbairn, director-general of the CBI.
