Canada exceeded its admission target in 2019 by welcoming 341,000 newcomers
In 2019, Canada set a new record by welcoming 341,000 new immigrants. In the history of Canada immigration, it is the fifth time when the country welcomed more than 300,000 immigrants in a year. In fact, this time, it has exceeded the admission target of 2019-2021, which were 330,800. Among newcomers, 58 per cent went through the economic class, 27 per cent through family sponsorship and the remaining 15 per cent were welcomed under the refugee class.
25 per cent of new immigrants are Indians:
The following is the list of top 10 countries which accounted as a source of newcomers in Canada. Among all, 25% of the population of new immigrants in 2019 was Indians, followed by Chinese accounting for 9 per cent of newcomers.

45 per cent of newcomers settled in Ontario:
Among all other Canadian provinces and territories, Ontario continues to ranks the top-most immigration destination in Canada for immigrants. In 2019, it welcomed 45% of population of new comers. As compared to 2018, percentage got increased by two percentage points.
British Columbia grabbed the second position as it welcomed 50,000 new immigrants in 2019 followed by Alberta and then Quebec. Quebec decided to reduce its intake of immigrant by 20 per cent in 2019 and due to which, it fell down to number fourth.
As compared to 2018, Manitoba welcomed more number of immigrants in 2019 through its streams like skilled worker in Manitoba, Skilled Worker Overseas and International education stream. Similarly, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Yukon also experienced rise in intake of immigrants in 2019.

35 per cent went to the Greater Toronto Area:
The GTA welcomed more immigrants (118,000 newcomers) than all four Atlantic Provinces (Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island), Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Quebec and Canada’s three territories combined.
In 2019, Canada’s four largest cities – Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, and Calgary together welcomed 62% of population of new comers. As compared to 2018, percentage got decreased by two percentage points because Quebec reduced its intake by 20 percent. As a result, the intake of Montreal fell by 10,000 newcomers.
Canada could welcome up to 360,000 immigrants in 2020:
According to three-year Immigration Levels Plan (2019-2021), the federal government is planning to target 1 million new immigrants by 2021. In 2020, it is expected to have an additional 341,000 newcomer arrivals; however, after immigration figures of 2019, Canada may exceed it again. In fact, under this plan, Canada will welcome up to 360,000 newcomers in 2020.
