2020-2022 Immigration Levels Plan announcement by March:
By March, Canada’s new Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, Marco Mendicino, will present the 2019 Annual Report mentioning Canada’s 2020-2022 Immigration Levels Plan. Based on earlier announcements, the immigration target for 2020 is expected to be 341,000 newcomers and 350,000 newcomers for 2021. However, a modest increase of 10,000 can be noticed to the 2022 target after Minister Mendicino’s Mandate Letter
Parents and Grandparents Program changes expected by April at the latest
The announcement for intake process plan for Canada’s Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) is expected by April 2020 at the latest. Moreover, the influx under PGP has been planned around 21,000 immigrants only; however, the federal government is planning to roll out new process to overcome the shortcomings presented by PGP in previous years.
Ottawa’s commitment to regionalization is undeniable
Under the 2019-2021 Immigration Plan, the Canadian government will look to welcome 67,800 immigrants through its Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) in 2020, which is an increase of around 11 per cent compared with the previous year 2019. Moreover, numbers of provinces and territories have started regional PNP streams through Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot (RNIP) to allow the entry of skilled foreign workers in smaller cities and rural communities. In 2020, it will ramp up and recruit newcomers to meet the shortage of labor in smaller communities.
The federal government is also putting extra efforts in the growth of entries of eligible immigrants in provinces. In 2017, it introduced the Atlantic Immigration Pilot Program (AIPP) to welcome more than 4000 new immigrants in four Atlantic Provinces of Newfoundland and Labrador, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick. AIPP is expected to become a permanent program soon.

Will citizenship fees be waived in 2020?
Currently, the citizenship fees costs $630 per adult, which some believes to be high for low-income individuals and families. So, Mendicino’s Mandate Letter includes the elimination of citizenship fee which may affect the citizenship uptake rate till the declaration of final decision. In case, it comes into effect, then citizenship rates could increase by about 40 per cent by 2024.
