Canadian Government extends application period for Post-Graduation Work Permits, drops valid study permit requirement
International graduates of eligible Canadian schools now have 180 days to apply for a PGWP
On Thursday, February 14, the Government of Canada announced the extension of the application period for post-graduation work permits from 90 days to 180 days. After the announcement, international students who want to remain in Canada on a post-graduation work permit now; have 180 days (six months) to apply for the popular Post-Graduate Work Permit (PGWP) program.
“This is huge news for international graduates who are applying for a Post-Graduation Work Permit,” said David Cohen, senior partner at the Campbell Cohen Canadian immigration law firm in Montreal.
“Doubling the amount of time they have to apply and allowing them to do so beyond the expiration date on their study visa will make a world of a difference for students who want to stay and gain valuable Canadian work experience.”
Moreover now, there is no need to have a valid study permit too while applying for PGWP. A Post-Graduation Work Permit is an open work permit, which allows eligible international graduates to stay and work in Canada up to three years after their studies or course get completed from a recognized Canadian institution.
It is worth noting that it is just the beginning of the year, and the government brings so many changes in the immigration process to make it easier and effective for new applicants. The Experts believe that this step is a boon for international students as now they don’t need to stress over an expired permit.
