Canadian Government Extends the Atlantic Immigration Pilot
In 2017, the Federal government of Canada and the provincial government of Atlanta together launched the three-year program, Atlantic Immigration Pilot to address the shortage of labor in its provinces like Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Labrador.
Now, the government has announced that Canada is extending its Atlantic Immigration Pilot to December 2021, to maintain the program’s momentum. It targets the hiring of eligible skilled workers and international graduates of universities and colleges in the Atlantic Canada region for these provinces to increase the economic growth in Atlantic Canada Region.
Minimum requirements for the program include at least one year of work experience in the full-time paid job under Canada’s National Occupational Classification (NOC) skilled type O, A or B.
Recently, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) have made estimation that around 1,896 employers in the Atlantic Canada region have hired 3,729 foreign job seekers through the AIP program since its inception. Out of these, 2,535 applicants and their families have already received the approval for Permanent Residence in Canada.
Due to high demand and increase in the number of application forms under this program in the past years, the concerned authorities enhance the allotment of new admission through AIP by 500 spaces.
Canada’s Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship (IRCC), Ahmed Hussein, said “extending the pilot’s lifespan “will give the Government of Canada and the Atlantic Provinces more time to experiment with different approaches and to assess the program’s medium and long-term impacts on the region.”
“Since 2017, the Atlantic Immigration Pilot has been very successful in attracting skilled immigrants to the Atlantic Canada region,” Hussen said. “IRCC and the Atlantic provinces have worked very hard and will continue to do so to ensure the pilot can address the unique labor and demographic challenges of the region.”
So, if you are interested in AIP, then make sure that you have to go through the following changes carefully before applying.
- International students will now have 24 months post-graduation to apply for the AIP. It helps to increase the participation of more eligible students in AIP as they get more time to complete the PR application process.
- Easy recruitment of internationally trained nurses for the job vacancies in the health care sector as home care support
- The Atlantic Provinces will appoint new authorities to focus their AIP spaces on in-demand labor market needs so that they can oversight the progress and issues of AIP quickly and manage the demands of designated employers.
- Beginning May 1, 2019, IRCC will require that applicants meet the language, education and work experience requirements of the AIP prior to being approved for a work permit.
