Canada is set to open its International Experience Canada (IEC) program to young foreign nationals who wish to live and work in the country on a temporary basis (two years). It selects applicants for the 2020 season under three categories including, Working Holiday, Young Professionals and International Co-op.

Working Holiday:

This category includes young adults of one of the 36 countries, ages between 18-30 years who intend to travel to Canada and search for temporary employment there. Under this category, eligible candidates receive an open work permit which allows them to work for almost any Canadian employer.

This flexible work permit is designed for those who:

• don’t have any job offer from a Canadian employer;
• wish to work for more than one Canadian employer;
• wish to work in more than one location in Canada;
• want to earn extra money to bear the expenses of travelling

To be eligible for working in the health sector or with vulnerable people, a medical exam by an approved physician is also required.

Young Professionals:

This category is designed for those who:

• have a valid job offer which must be paid and classified as a National Occupational Classification (NOC) Code Skill Type Level 0, A, or B contributing to their professional development

Note: NOC C job may be eligible if a candidate has a post-secondary diploma, certificate or degree along with work permit application.

• wish to work for the same Canadian employer, fulfilling all labour laws in the province or territory like minimum wage requirements
• wish to work in the same location for the entire stay in Canada

Under this category, selected candidates receive an employer-specific work permit which allows them to work for a single employer for the entire stay specified on the permit.

International Co-op (Internship):

Under this category, selected candidates receive an employer-specific work permit which allows them to work for a single employer for the entire stay specified on the permit. This work permit is designed for those students who:

• are registered at a post-secondary institution;
• have a job offer or work placement/internship in Canada;
• are in search of the work placement/internship to complete their studies;
• wish to work for the same employer in the same location during the entire stay

Moreover, the internship must be directly linked to the applicant’s field of study as well as wages must follow the labour laws in the province or territory where the internship will take place.

Staying in Canada after IEC

IEC is the first step towards permanent residence as IEC participants can apply to Canada’s Express Entry program including Federal Skilled Worker Class (FSWC), Federal Skilled Trades Class (FSTC), and Canadian Experience Class (CEC). CEC requires a minimum of one year of Canadian work experience. Besides, it ranks the applications based on factors like age, education, and language ability. The experience gained through an IEC program can boost up the chances of an Express Entry candidate being selected for an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for Canada PR.
