Toronto welcomed 118,000 immigrants
Among all, Toronto continues to occupy the highest position for welcoming the maximum number of immigrants in 2019. It welcomed around 35 per cent of total newcomers (ie. 117,720) in the last year followed by Vancouver, Montreal, Calgary and Edmonton.
Charlottetown ranks number 1 on a per capita basis
On a per-capita basis, the order of cities got changed. Using this metric, Charlottetown ranked number one as the share of newcomers was 2.4 per cent of its population last year. It happened due to large skilled immigration to the Canadian province, Prince Edward Island, through its PNP and AIPP.
Following Charlottetown, Regina in Saskatchewan ranked second as its share of newcomers to its population was 2.35 per cent.
The third rank was occupied by Toronto with a share of 1.8 per cent of its population in newcomers followed by Saskatoon and Winnipeg with almost similar 1.8 per cent.
Growth in Atlantic Canada
Several cities in Atlantic Canada like Fredericton, Halifax, and Moncton welcomed a good per cent of immigrants in recent years, which helped in promoting their economic development. Both the PNP and AIPP have contributed a lot in strengthening the immigration system to the region.
Ottawa-Gatineau joins an exclusive club
Newcomers in Ottawa-Gatineau were one per cent of its population in 2019. A large number of international students turned to Permanent Residents there through OINP and Express entry. Moreover, the decision of reduction of 20 per cent of immigration by the Quebec Government also pushed some immigrants who were interested in settling Quebec towards the Ottawa-Gatineau region.
Why a per capita intake of one per cent is important
Having intake of one per cent of the population at either national, or provincial, or municipal level is a major milestone in Canada immigration system. The primary goal of Canada immigration is to welcome skilled immigrants to meet the shortage of skills in the labor market to boost up the productivity and economy of the country. It is expected that an intake of one per cent of the population as immigrants will put Canada in healthier economic situations.
Over 80 streams to promote immigration across Canada
There are more than 80 economic class streams under Express Entry, express entry linked PNP and AIPP more. These streams help smaller cities to achieve the important 1 % newcomer milestone.
